How Many Backlinks Does a Website Need?

People ask for a number, but the honest answer is: it depends entirely on what you’re competing against. A local service page might rank with a handful of relevant links. A competitive national keyword might need dozens of referring domains from genuinely authoritative sites.

A better question: what do the current top results have?

Look at whoever currently ranks on page one for your target keyword. Their referring domain count (not raw backlink count — see our piece on backlinks vs. referring domains) gives you a rough benchmark. If they all have links from a handful of well-known sites in your niche, that’s the bar — not an arbitrary number pulled from a blog post.

Quality beats quantity, reliably

Ten relevant, editorially-placed links tend to outperform a hundred low-quality ones — and the hundred low-quality ones carry real downside risk if they look manufactured. Past a certain point, more low-quality links don’t just plateau in value, they can actively hurt you.
