Anchor text is the visible, clickable text of a hyperlink. It tells both readers and search engines what to expect on the other end of that link — which makes it a meaningful SEO signal, for better or worse.
Common anchor text types
- Exact match — the anchor is your exact target keyword (“backlink packages”).
- Partial match — includes the keyword within a longer phrase (“check out these backlink packages”).
- Branded — your brand name (“Backlinks Creator”).
- Generic — (“click here”, “read more”).
- Naked URL — the raw URL as the visible text.
Why over-optimization is risky
A natural link profile has a healthy mix of all of the above, weighted toward branded and generic. When the same exact-match phrase shows up across dozens of backlinks, it reads as manufactured — this exact pattern is one of the clearer signals search engines have used to identify manipulative link building since the Penguin update era.
What to do instead
Let anchor text vary naturally, the way it would if real people were linking to you organically. When we build links as part of our Link Building Services, anchor variety is planned deliberately rather than left to chance — or worse, repeated on purpose.
